NHL: Avalanche Hands Tampa Bay First Home Loss

TAMPA – Tampa Bay suffered its first loss at home this season following a 6-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche at AMALIE Arena.

The Lightning dropped to 4-3-1 (9 pts.) on the season and saw their two-game win streak stopped. The Bolts also saw a five-game win streak versus Colorado snapped.

Colorado’s Tyler Jost scored the first of his three goals at 3:09 of the opening period to give the Avalanche an early 1-0 lead.

Yanni Gourde leveled the game 1-1 at 17:35 of the first period after netting his first goal of the season. Gourde has four points in 2019-20 (1-3—4).

Colorado scored a trio of goals in a span of 2:49 of the second period to open up a 4-1 lead.

Jost scored his second goal of the game at 3:17 of the second to put the Avalanche in front for good at 2-1. Gabriel Landeskog made the score 3-1 at 5:48 of the second after netting his third goal of the year. Jost completed his hat trick :18 seconds after Landeskog’s goal for a 4-1 Colorado advantage.

Nikita Kucherov was awarded a penalty shot at 5:06 of the third period but was unsuccessful on his attempt, which was Kucherov’s third penalty shot attempt of his career. He’s 0-for-3 on penalty shot attempts.

Nazem Kadri extended Colorado’s lead to 5-1 at 6:30 of the third period.

Victor Hedman scored his first goal of the season at 11:48 of the final period to bring the Lightning to within 5-2. Hedman has tallied points in three-straight games (1-2—3) and seven of eight games this season (1-6—7).

Mikko Rantanen scored unassisted with 5:33 remaining in the game for the 6-2 final.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 18 saves on 24 shots in a losing effort to fall to 4-2-0 on the season. Tampa Bay outshot Colorado 46-24, the third time this season the Lightning have outshot their opponent.

The Lightning continue their three-game homestand Wednesday when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins at AMALIE Arena at 8 p.m.

GAME NOTES: The Lightning’s 46 shots were their most this season and most since putting up 47 shots Dec. 16, 2018 in a 5-4 overtime loss at Winnipeg…he Bolts’ 18 shots in the third period were their most for a period this season… Steven Stamkos led the team with seven shots, the most by a Lightning player this season…. The Lightning fell to 1-1-0 at AMALIE Arena this season.
