THE PLAYERS: Simpson Out Paces Field for 2018 Title at TPC Sawgrass

PONTE VEDRA BEACH – Webb Simpson shot 18 under part to claim the 2018 Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Simpson, 32,  finished the a final round  with a 73 on Sunday, finishing at 270 for the tournament and winning by four strokes.

“It was tough. Being in that position was a lot harder than I thought,” Simpson said. “You always want to be leading going into the final round and you would think leading by seven is great. But it is hard to stay motivated to continue to do what you’ve been doing. I had a good morning this morning and was able to get it done.”

Simpson is ranked No. 20 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

“It is big, I love this golf tournament. It was here last year where I got that lesson, and so I think it is pretty special that a year later we come out with a victory. So this is one I do want to celebrate with the team and reinforce that it is a group effort,” added Simpson.

Tiger Woods began the day tied for ninth place after shooting his lowest round ever at the tournament in the third round of play. He finished tied for 11th after shooting a final round of 69. Woods was 11-under-par for the tournament.

Defending champion Si Woo Kim finished tied for 63rd in his title defense. The last defending champion to finish in the top 10 was Adam Scott in 2005, four strokes behind Fred Funk.

THE SIMPSON FILE: Simpson converted the largest 54-hole lead in the tournament’s history, he becomes the sixth player to win The Players, a major and a FedExCup Playoffs event. Simpson led the field in driving accuracy and ranked last in driving distance. His last win on the PGA Tour came on Oct. 20, 2013 at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
