FGCU Back-to-Back ASUN Champs; Clips UNF to Earn Trip to NCAA

Top-seeded FGCU dominated the second half against No. 3 North Florida to earn its third trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 77-61 victory. The Eagles outscored the Ospreys 44-22 after halftime, while ASUN Championship Most Valuable Player, Brandon Goodwin, tied the game-high with 19 points and added seven assists on one turnover.

Goodwin led five Eagles in double figures as fellow All-Tournament team members, Demetris Morant (14 points) and Marc-Eddy Norelia (14) combined for 28 points and 16 rebounds. Two-time ASUN Player of the Year, Dallas Moore tied the game-high with 19 points, as he added All-Tournament team honors to his long list of accolades.DSC_6304

The Eagles dominated the paint outscoring North Florida 40-24 as Morant threw down several dunks in the opening minutes of the game. The Ospreys countered with perimeter shooting and took the lead midway through the opening period and were able to extend the lead to as many as seven points. Aaron Bodager and Osborn Blount provided some outside shooting as they combined for four triples in the first half. The Ospreys shot 15-for-30 in the first half and they took a 39-33 into the break.

FGCU’s defense took over in the second half as the Eagles held UNF to 5-of-27 from the field including 1-of-14 from deep. The Eagle offense thrived after the break in front of an Alico Arena record 4,711 fans by connecting on 16-of-27 field goals and 5-of-8 three pointers. Christian Terrell and Zach Johnson both tallied 10 points in the win with all five starters scoring double digits.

The victory marks the 26th of the season, which ties the program record previously set in 2013 when Dunk City advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. North Florida’s season ends with a 15-19 mark as the Ospreys appeared in the program’s third ASUN Final. FGCU finds out its opponent for the NCAA Tournament during the Selection Show on Sunday, March 12th at 6 PM ET on CBS.

ASUN Championship Notes: UNF’s Dallas Moore’s career ends with 2,437 points, which ranks second-most in ASUN history, while his 551 assists rank sixth….Brandon Goodwin set the FGCU program record for points in a single season as he moved past Marc-Eddy Norelia’s mark of 597 last season. Goodwin sits with 601….FGCU heads to its third NCAA Tournament where the Eagles own a 3-2 record all-time in March Madness. The Eagles are the sixth program in conference history with three ASUN Championship titles…UNF’s Chris Davenport capped his career with 1,353 points, 825 rebounds and 151 blocks, which all rank in the ASUN record books.
